Quakers Down Women's Hoops

WINCHESTER, Va. – Visiting Guilford College outscored Shenandoah University by seven points in the third quarter to key a 52-47 ODAC women's basketball victory over the Hornets Wednesday afternoon.

The Quakers (8-1, 2-0 ODAC) scored 13 of the 20 points in the third stanza to take a lead they would not relinquish over SU (3-7, 0-2).

The Hornets, who trailed by nine, 50-41, with 3:24 remaining, made matters interesting by scoring the game's next six points to cut the deficit to just three with 46 seconds remaining.

Unfortunately for the Shingleton Gymnasium crowd, Anais Weatherly canned a 10-foot jumper with 20 seconds left and then Shenandoah turned the ball over on its ensuing possession.

Guilford's strong third quarter, a period in which GC forced seven Hornets turnovers with four steals, ended a first half stretch that saw the two teams trade the lead five times and were tied on one other.

Trailing 15-11 after one, Shenandoah had three 3-pointers among its seven second quarter field goals to knot the game at 29-29 by halftime.

The Quakers then opened the fourth by scoring the first four points and eight of the initial 10 to take that lead.

The advantage reached nine points once in the third and twice in the fourth before Shenandoah made that final run. Sophomore Kirstyn Arcata had all six of those points, including a 4 for 4 performance from the line.

Weatherly led all scorers with 14 points with Arcata posting 12 for the hosts.

GC had a 48-31 advantage on the glass despite a game-high 12 rebounds from Erin French.

SU is back in action on Monday with a non-league contest at Mary Washington. Opening tip is scheduled for 5 p.m.
