FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's basketball team wrapped up the non-conference portion of its schedule Monday with a 61-34 loss at Mary Washington.
The Eagles (9-2) used a 25-point first quarter to key the win over Shenandoah (3-8).
UMW hit its first two shots from the field, both from behind the 3-point arc, and quickly jumped out to a 15-3 lead by the 4:48 mark of the first.
Freshman Shannon Kuhn, who paced the Hornets with nine points, stopped the Eagles run with a jumper at 4:28.
Mary Washington then closed out the period on a 10-2 run.
Unfortunately for SU, the Eagles scored the initial 14 points of the second and 17 of the 22 in the stanza to take a 42-12 lead by halftime.
Down 30 at the break, Shenandoah outscored Mary Washington over the final 20 minutes of play. Coach Melissa Smeltzer-Kraft's club scored nine of the 15 points in third before the two teams split the final 26 points of the contest.
In addition to Kuhn's nine points, Morgan Kuhns added six points and Mary Severin four.
Nine of the 11 Hornets that played scored at least one point.
Elizabeth Dofflemyer had a game-high 12 points for the Eagles. UMW had four players in double figures.
SU travels to Roanoke on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. ODAC contest.
