Eastern Mennonite Tops Women

WINCHESTER, Va. - League leading Eastern Mennonite University maintained its position atop the ODAC women's basketball standings with a 66-41 victory over Shenandoah Wednesday evening.

The Royals (18-3, 12-1 ODAC) led for all but 42 seconds on their way to completing the season sweep over Shenandoah (7-15, 3-10).

After EMU scored the opening four points of the game, SU came back to tie thanks to Kirstyn Arcata and Erin French jumpers, but was unable to take the lead.

Eastern Mennonite answered this Hornets run by scoring the game's next 10 points and 29 of the next 37 to take a commanding 33-12 lead by the 5:22 mark of the first.

Consecutive Arcata 3-pointers followed by a Holly Chittenden jumper allowed SU to cut it to 14 points before EMU took a 16-point, 36-20, lead into the break.

Shenandoah played the Royals even for the initial 5:27 of the second before EMU pulled away with a 17-2 run from the 13:20 to 8:02 marks of the second.

SU then scored nine of the game's final 11 points to provide the final margin of victory.

Chittenden paced the hosts with 13 points and 12 rebounds – it was her 22nd career double-double – while Arcata had 10 points.

Jess Rheinheimer had 20 points and 10 boards for the victors.

Shenandoah hosts Hollins on Saturday at 2:00 in the squad's Play4Kay contest.
