WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's lacrosse team earned its second straight win to start the 2015 season with a 9-7 non-league victory over Methodist University Saturday afternoon.
After the Monarchs (0-1) took a 4-1 lead on the strength of three straight goals early in the second quarter, Shenandoah (2-0) scored seven of the game's next eight goals to take a lead it would not relinquish.
Methodist scored the initial second half goal, getting a Chris Lombardi tally at 8:52 of the third, before SU reeled off five straight to lead 7-5 with 11:15 remaining in the game.
Sophomore Tilghman Sanders got this run started with goals at 6:00 and 2:11, the latter off a Jack Greaney assist, before Casey Edsall closed out the third quarter scoring with an unassisted tally at 33 seconds.
Sanders' classmate, Stephen LaTona had the goal at 11:15 and then set up Connor Bishop for an EMO goal at 8:57 that proved to be the game-winner.
Methodist sandwiched a pair of goals around another LaTona to Bishop tally in the final 5:42 to provide the final margin.
SU outshot its visitors 45-26, had a 41-20 advantage in groundballs and won 11 of 19 faceoffs in securing the win.
SU was 8 of 10 from the faceoff 'x' in the second half.
Ben Judy had 11 saves in the winning effort.
The Hornets return to action next Saturday with a 1 p.m. non-league home game against Wesley.
