WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's lacrosse team lost for the first time this season in a 13-4 home non-league defeat to Frostburg State.
After the Hornets (2-1) on a Stephen LaTona to Aaron Paul tally at 12:18 of the first, FSU scored the game's next six goals to take a lead it would not relinquish.
The Bobcats (1-0) held SU off the scoreboard from Paul's goal at 12:18 until LaTona converted a feed from Tilghman Sanders with 3:51 remaining before halftime.
The Sanders to LaTona tally came with Frostburg down a man due to a tripping penalty.
That penalty was one of just two called in the contest.
The Bobcats answered LaTona's goal with a Tate Rolland to Spencer Love goal 43 seconds later to give themselves a 7-2 lead at the halftime break.
FSU then scored the only two goals of the third, tallying at 14:19 and 3:47, to hold a seven-goal lead heading into the final stanza.
LaTona, who leads the Hornets with eight goals, figured in the final two SU tallies. He scored unassisted at 10:56 of the fourth and then set up Jack Greaney at the 8:51 mark to close the book on the hosts' scoresheet.
Frostburg scored at 7:34 and 6:27 to provide the final margin.
The Bobcats outshot Shenandoah 54-12, had a 47-14 advantage in groundballs and won 18 of 21 faceoffs.
SU goalkeeper Ben Judy had 21 saves in the losing effort.
The Hornets are back in action Saturday afternoon with a non-league game versus Hood. There is a chance that the location of this game will be shifted from Hood's campus in Frederick to Sprint Field at Shentel Stadium. Please check www.suhornets.com on Thursday for updated information.
