WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's lacrosse team opened up its 2015 season Wednesday afternoon with a 15-6 non-league loss to Mary Washington.
Playing through frigid conditions that included a heavy snow squall in the first half, Shenandoah (0-1) saw Mary Washington (1-0) score the game's first eight goals on its way to the second win in the three game series between the two programs.
Freshman Abby Zorrilla snapped the scoreless streak for SU, scoring off of a Brittany Arndt assist nine seconds before halftime.
The Hornets used this momentum swing to score two of the initial three goals of the second half only to see UMW reassert control with a four-goal run from the 18:41 to 12:35 marks that put the Eagles up 14-4.
Shenandoah then scored two of the game's final three goals, both by senior Liz Bereit on free position shots, to provide the final margin.
Mary Washington owned a 39-23 advantage in shots, scooped up 11 of the game's 21 groundballs and won 13 of 22 draw controls.
Zorrilla and Bereit each had two goals for SU, Arndt had a goal and an assist and freshman Annie McCorry tallied her first collegiate goal on a free position shot five minutes into the second half.
Bereit also had a team-high four draw controls.
Corinne Wiederkehr paced the victors with four goals and one assist for five points.
Shenandoah is back in action on Saturday with a non-league game against Lebanon Valley.
