Women's Hoops Wins on Senior Day

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's basketball team made its Senior Day a special one with a 60-54 ODAC victory over Washington and Lee.

The win for Shenandoah (8-17, 4-12 ODAC) over W&L (15-9, 8-8) puts SU into a three-way tie for ninth place in the league standings with Roanoke and Randolph College.

By virtue of its 2-1 record against the Maroons and WildCats, the Hornets earn the ninth seed for the upcoming tournament and will travel to No. 8 Bridgewater for a 7 p.m. contest on Tuesday.

After leading throughout the first half, Shenandoah found itself in a battle with the Generals as W&L was able to make up an eight-point first half deficit by sandwiching a 7-0 run around the halftime break.

SU, which led 29-28 at the break, saw W&L take a one-point, 30-29, lead thanks to a Wesleigh Vick jumper 19 seconds into the second half.

The two teams then traded the lead five times and were tied on one other occasion in the final 18:36 of the game.

Neither team was able to extend its lead past five points until Shenandoah, thanks to eight points from freshman Breya Wallace, was able to pull away in the final 2:18.

Holding a 48-47 with 2:31 remaining, Wallace drained a 3-pointer, and following a Paige Corvino layup at the other end of the floor, scored the game's next five points to put the Hornets on top 56-49 with 35 seconds left.

Wallace' final three points of that spurt came from the free throw line.

Washington and Lee briefly made matters interesting by hitting a 3-pointer of its own and converting a steal into a layup, but Kirstyn Arcata and Holly Chittenden each converted a pair of free throws in the final 16 seconds to ice the victory.

Wallace and Arcata led the SU offense with 17 and 16 points, respectively, with Ashley McGhee adding 11 and Chittenden 10.

Chittenden, the Hornets lone senior, finished her final game in Shingleton Gymnasium with 10 points, six rebounds and four assists in 26 minutes of action.

Jackie Clifford had 12 points and Corvino 10 for the Generals.
