WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's basketball team made its Senior Day a special one Saturday with a 56-53 ODAC victory over Guilford.
Senior Eli McEathron, making just his fourth start of the season, provided the game-winning bucket for SU (3-18, 2-10 ODAC) by draining a 3-pointer with 6.1 seconds remaining.
The Hornets fouled on the ensuing Guilford (15-6, 8-4) possession, and after Matt McCarthy hit a pair from the line with three seconds left, McEathron iced the victory by draining two of his own one second after McCarthy went 2 for 2.
GC had one last gasp in itself, and McCarthy's heave from midcourt bounced off the back rim as time expired.
McEathron's 3-pointer, taken from 23 feet and right in front of the SU bench, capped a game in which the two teams traded the lead 10 times and were tied on nine additional occasions.
Guilford led for the majority of the contest, 25:59, while the two teams were tied for 9:17.
Until McEathron's 3-pointer, one of four he hit on the day, Shenandoah led for only seven seconds in the second half.
This lone lead came following an Aaron Patterson 3-pointer with 17:11 to play; the Quakers answered with a 7-0 run and held this advantage until McEathron tied it with 3-pointers at 6:39 and 2:04 before putting SU on top to stay with the final field goal of the contest.
McEathron had a career-high 15 points in win with his classmate, Xavier Alston, chipping in 12 points and six rebounds.
Alston helped Shenandoah head into halftime down just four, 29-25, by scoring eight points and pulling down four rebounds.
SU completes its home schedule Wednesday night with an 8 p.m. game against Washington and Lee. This is the second half of an ODAC doubleheader with the Hornet women. They host Eastern Mennonite in a 6 p.m. game.
