LATROBE, Pa. - The Shenandoah University women's lacrosse team continued its strong start to the 2015 season with a 20-6 non-league victory over St. Vincent Wednesday afternoon.
Senior Liz Bereit, playing in her hometown for the first time in her career, celebrated her homecoming by scoring a game-high six goals and one assist for seven points.
Bereit opened the scoring for SU (4-1) by tallying off of a Miranda Rudacille assist at the 28:44 mark of the first and after the Bearcats (0-4) scored the game's next three goals, helped key a six-goal Shenandoah run in a span of 5:49 to take total control of the contest.
Bereit had a natural hat trick during this spurt, scoring at 21:53, 20:09 and 18:50, the last off a Sabina Rasoulov assist, before setting up Rudacille at 18:34 to give the Hornets a 7-3 lead.
St. Vincent would come no closer than three goals the rest of the way.
After the Bobcats answered that SU run with a goal at 16:12, the Hornets turned the game into a rout by sandwiching an 11-0 run around halftime.
Eight different women had at least one goal during this run with sophomore Brittany Arndt tallying four times.
Arndt matched Bereit's natural hat trick with one of her own, scoring at 6:39, 3:53 and 2:49 of the first. Her final goal of this run came at 19:36 of the second.
The two teams traded four goals in the last 10:23 of the contest to provide the final margin.
SU outshot its hosts 35-9, had a 23-11 advantage in groundballs and won 14 of 27 draws.
Hornets goalkeeper Rachel Levy had to make just one save.
Shenandoah is back in action at home on Saturday at 1 p.m. in its ODAC opener against Lynchburg.
