WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's lacrosse team opened up its 2015 ODAC slate Saturday afternoon with a 10-9 victory over Lynchburg College.
Senior Liz Bereit netted the game-winner for SU (5-1, 1-0 ODAC) by tallying unassisted with 15 seconds remaining over Lynchburg (2-3, 0-1).
Bereit, who had five goals for the victors, split two defenders before slipping her bounce shot just off of the hip of LC goalkeeper Hailey Bossert.
Bereit's tally capped a rally in which SU scored the final three goals of the game.
With the game tied 6-6 at halftime and then 7-7 when the two teams traded the initial goals of the second stanza, Lynchburg appeared to be in control by scoring twice within a 34-second midway through the second.
Shenandoah called timeout immediate after the second goal and began its comeback with a Brittany Arndt goal at the 12:11 mark.
A pair of freshmen, Annie McCorry and Cortney Gensemer, paired up to knot the game at 9-9 with 4:09 to play and set Bereit up to play the hero.
Lynchburg called time following Bereit's game-winner, but committed a foul on the ensuing draw and SU was able to run out the clock.
Shenandoah outshot its fellow Hornets 26-24 and owned a 14-7 advantage in draw controls.
LC scooped up 20 of the game's 31 groundballs and SU goalkeeper Rachel Levy had 13 saves in the winning effort.
In addition to Bereit's five goals, Arndt scored twice and McCorry had a goal and two assists.
Caroline Carozza had three goals and two assists for Lynchburg.
Shenandoah continues this homestand with a 6 p.m. game Wednesday against Washington and Lee.
