WINCHESTER, Va. - No. 10 Washington and Lee University halted Shenandoah University's five-match women's lacrosse winning streak with a 9-6 ODAC victory Wednesday evening.
Shenandoah (5-2, 1-1 ODAC) scored the game's opening goal when freshman Annie McCorry converted a free position shot, but W&L (6-1, 2-0) had an answer.
The Generals answered McCorry's tally with a free position goal of their own 31 seconds later, and scored the game's next three goal to take a lead they would not relinquish.
SU was able to cut its deficit to two goals on three occasions, the last following a Cortney Gensemer free position goal with 27:05 to play, but could get no closer.
Washington and Lee answered the Gensemer tally with three straight to take a 9-4 lead with 5:18 remaining before Gensemer and Liz Bereit tallied for the hosts at 3:15 and :15, respectively, to provide the final margin.
W&L outshot the Hornets 26-11, had an 18-12 advantage in groundballs and won nine of 16 draws.
Gensemer led the hosts with three goals, Bereit had two goals and an assists and McCorry one goal.
Shenandoah is back in action on Saturday at 1:00 in a non-league game against McDaniel. At halftime, the program will also welcome back and honor the 2005 USA South Conference championship team.
