WINCHESTER, Va. - Visiting Stevenson University scored the first three goals Saturday on its way to a 3-1 non-league field hockey victory over Shenandoah.
The Mustangs (1-6) scored in the 14th and 35th minutes of the first half to provide all of the offense they would need against Shenandoah (1-4).
After Stevenson scored again, this one on a Holli Eppley unassisted tally in the 52nd minute, the Hornets answered back less than two minutes later.
Senior Presha Merritt found classmate Kelani Bailey at 53:12 to cut the hosts' deficit to two goals.
Shenandoah outshot its visitors 10-9 and took nine of the game's 10 penalty corners, but saw nine of those 10 shots go wide of the Stevenson goal.
Hornets goalkeeper Jessica Brown had two of her three saves in the second half.
Shenandoah continues this homestand with a 7 p.m. non-league game against St. Mary's of Maryland Wednesday evening.
