WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University field hockey team snapped its four-match losing streak Wednesday evening with a 2-1 non-league win over St. Mary's of Maryland.
Shenandoah (2-4) never trailed in the contest and led for the final 9:35 as senior Kelani Bailey tallied the game-winner 10:25 into the second half.
Bailey took a pass from classmate Presha Merritt and ripped her waist-high shot just inside the right post for the game-clinching goal.
SU needed Bailey's tally as St. Mary's (3-4) knotted the game at 1-1 on a Mollie Belson shot at 11:31.
Belson lofted a 10-yard shot over everybody's head and just under the crossbar for an equalizing tally.
Shenandoah had taken the early lead on a Alana Meadows to Kayla Alderman goal just 3:23 in. Alderman knocked home a Meadows pass off of a penalty corner.
That corner was one of seven for the Hornets on the night.
The 'Hawks outshot SU 10-8, but Shenandoah had a 7-6 advantage in corners.
SU goalkeeper Jessica Brown made two saves in the win.
The Hornets continue this homestand on Saturday with their ODAC opener against Virginia Wesleyan. Game time is 1 p.m.
