WINCHESTER, Va. – Visiting Virginia Wesleyan withstood a late barrage from Shenandoah University to earn a 2-1 ODAC women's soccer victory Saturday afternoon on the Sprint Field at Shentel Stadium turf.
Shenandoah (3-6, 0-1 ODAC) had three of its game-high six corner kicks in the final 15 minutes Saturday, but could not get the equalizing goal against VWC (5-5, 1-0).
All three goals were scored in the initial 21:48 of the contest.
The Marlins struck first, scoring at 11:21 on a Zoe Traficante to Kaitlyn Clunan goal, before SU brought the game back to level on a Jennifer Nguyen tally.
Nguyen was the beneficiary of a Danielle Burris and Elizabeth Bellido double assist.
Down the one goal, Shenandoah continued to put pressure on the VWC goal and earned three late corners as a result.
Two of those resulted in excellent scoring chances, with the ball free on the Marlins doorstep, but SU could not complete either set piece.
Virginia Wesleyan outshot Shenandoah 14-12, with the Hornets taking eight of the game's 12 second-half shots.
Hornets goalkeeper Erin Septer had five saves.
"It was a tough game today," SU coach Liz Pike said. "We are now in ODAC play, and we need to learn to match our opponents' physicality. This is a different level of intensity."
The women host Randolph-Macon at 5:00 Wednesday in another ODAC contest.
