Hockey Vetoes Presidents

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University field hockey team made its delayed season opener a positive one by shutting out Washington & Jefferson 3-0 Saturday afternoon.

Forced to wait an extra three days because Wednesday's scheduled season opener at Hood was postponed due to a thunderstorm, Shenandoah (1-0) wasted little time in jumping on the Presidents (1-1).

Sophomore Elizabeth Pardo opened the day's scoring just 10:31 into the contest by converting a Presha Merritt cross from right on the doorstep.

Starting with one of its seven penalty corners on the day, senior Sarah Brock inserted the corner to Merritt at the top of the arc, where she backhanded over to Pardo for the opening goal.

In the 43rd minute, junior Taylor Little knocked home a save of a Morgan Lingo shot to give the hosts some breathing room.

Merritt set up the final goal as well, finding Pardo for the second time of the day in the 64th minute.

Jenna Rampale and Jessica Brown had three and five saves, respectively, to share the shutout.

The SU defense had an additional five defensive saves with Merritt and Alexa Lapp stopping two each.

The Hornets travel to McDaniel on Tuesday for a non-league match.
