Volleyball Sweeps Opening Day

DANVILLE, Va. - The Shenandoah University volleyball team opened up Averett Tournament play Saturday by sweeping a pair of former USA South Conference foes.

Shenandoah (3-0) opened with a 3-0 win over for Greensboro and closed out the day by downing Averett by the same score.

The victory over AU is the first-ever in volleyball for the Hornets.

Sophomore Elizabeth Lamont had a match-high 10 kills to lead SU to the opening victory over the Pride (1-1).

Lamont's final kill of the match, off a Rachel Cerretani assist, closed out the victory.

Shenandoah won at 22, 16 and 19 in the first meeting against GC since the Hornets left the USA South after the 2011 season.

Senior Blake Parkes had seven kills and junior Rachel Roberts six to back up Lamont.

Defensively, Parkes had 13 digs and Brandi Griffith 11.

Jasmine Callahan and Cerretani had 19 and 12 assists, respectively, to fuel the offense.

Against the Cougars (3-1), Parkes and Kaitlyn Kelley had eight kills apiece with Lamont and Roberts adding six each.

Griffith had a match-high 16 digs.

Shenandoah completes tournament play Sunday by taking on ODAC opponents Hollins and Roanoke. Both contests will be considered non-conference.
