WINCHESTER, Va. – Visiting Virginia Wesleyan won for the fourth time in five outings Wednesday night in a 60-42 ODAC women's basketball victory over Shenandoah.
SU (4-12, 1-6 ODAC) and the Marlins (6-10, 4-4) traded the lead five times in the opening moments before VWC took the lead for good on a Raya Berkley jumper with 4:11 to play in the first.
Shenandoah kept Virginia Wesleyan with six points for most of the second, and was able to cut the deficit to one point on three different occasions before the Marlins closed out the first half with a 5-0 run.
VWC scored the opening bucket of the third, and eight of the first 10 points, to push its advantage out to 12 points with 6:15 remaining in the third.
SU would get no closer than six points the rest of the way.
Coach Melissa Smeltzer-Kraft's club cut that deficit to six thanks to a 9-2 run over a 3:47 span that sandwiched the third period break.
Unfortunately for the Hornets, Virginia Wesleyan scored 14 of the final 16 points of the game to close out the 18-point victory.
Shenandoah was held scoreless after Shannon Kuhn's layup with 5:14 remaining.
Kuhn led the hosts with 14 points with Kanesha Foster adding 12.
Erin French had 10 rebounds for the Hornets.
Kelly Jones had a game-high 18 points for the victors, who shot 42 percent to the Hornets 30 percent.
VWC also had a 42-38 advantage on the glass.
