Men Claw 'Cats

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Shenandoah University men's basketball team earned its first ODAC victory of the season Saturday afternoon with a 65-63 overtime win over Randolph College.

The Hornets (4-15, 1-9 ODAC) snapped a 13-game losing streak with the win over Randolph (10-9, 4-6).

The win is also Shenandoah's first road win since January 11, 2014, a span of 25 games, and snaps a 10-game losing streak to Randolph that dates back to the 2008-09 season.

Junior Malcolm Clark provided SU with the game-winning points by canning a pair from the charity stripe with four seconds to play in overtime.

The 'Cats had a Zach Desgain 3-point attempt as time expired to steal the win, but the shot was no good and Shenandoah earned its first-ever victory at Randolph.

Clark, who finished with a game-high 19 points, pushed the game into overtime by nailing a buzzer-beating game-tying layup in regulation.

Clark's bucket capped a furious comeback that saw SU score 17 of the final 25 points in regulation in a span of 5:17 to erase a nine-point deficit.

The game featured seven ties and seven lead changes, but Randolph led for 33:14 of the 45-minute contest including 18:36 of the 20-minute second half.

Clark got that pivotal run started with a layup at 5:17, followed by an Antwan Pittman 3-pointer at 4:35.

A Clark three-point play at 4:02 brought the Hornets to within one, 50-49, and then Aaron Patterson put SU on top for just the second time in the stanza with a fastbreak layup 16 seconds later.

The 'Cats answered back with a 3-pointer of their own at 3:23 only to see Shenandoah score seven of the final 10 points of regulation in 93 seconds to force overtime.

Clark led all scorers with 19 and Pittman added 10 as SU shot 42 percent for the contest.

Jason Eddie had 15 for the hosts, who shot 45 percent and owned a 35-29 advantage on the glass.

Shenandoah is back in action on Wednesday night in a 7 p.m. ODAC home contest against Eastern Mennonite.
