LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's soccer team earned its sixth straight win Wednesday night with a 5-1 ODAC victory at Randolph.
The Hornets (10-2, 4-0 ODAC) controlled the game from the outset, but found themselves in a one-goal game at halftime as Randolph (0-7-1, 0-3) was able to score its lone goal 2:06 before the break.
SU took that one-goal lead into the half thanks to Jennifer Nguyen and Emily Yergin unassisted tallies in the 22nd and 38th minutes, respectively.
Yergin and Nguyen proved to be too much in the second half as Yergin scored in the 55th and 81nd minutes while setting up Nguyen's goal in the 60th.
The three second half tallies were more than enough for the Shenandoah defense, which allowed Randolph just three shots over the final 45 minutes.
Yergin, who has been named ODAC Player of the Week in each of the past two weeks, now has recorded a hat trick in successive games for the first time in her career.
Through 12 games, she now has 17 goals, a total that is just six off of the school record of 23 set by Jen Johnson '95 in 1992. The 17 goals is good for fourth all-time; Yergin is two goals from tying Brandy Wheeler '96 for the third spot.
Shenandoah outshot the 'Cats 35-9 for the game and had seven of the game's eight corners.
Erin Septer had to make just two saves to earn the win.
"We know playing conference games means teams are going to give us a battle and Randolph did that," head coach Liz Pike said.
"We had outstanding performances Jen (Nguyen), Emily (Yergin) and Sara Fuller."
SU returns home on Saturday to host Emory and Henry in a 2 p.m. ODAC contest.
