Women's Hoops Drops Overtime Contest

WINCHESTER, Va. – Visiting Hood College used a full-court press to key a 74-71 non-league women's basketball overtime victory over Shenandoah Saturday afternoon.

The Blazers (4-5) won for the sixth time in the longtime series by generating 28 points off of 16 Shenandoah (3-6) turnovers.

The game, which featured nine ties and 13 lead changes, went into overtime for the second straight year as Hornets freshman Sarah Donley calmly canned two free throws with five seconds remaining in regulation to knot the contest at 60.

Hood had a chance to win in regulation, but missed a baseline jumper as time expired.

In the OT, SU struck first with an Erin French jumper.

French, who had a career-high 28 points to go along with 12 rebounds, also scored her squad's second basket of the extra session.

Leading 67-64 following a McKenzie Mathis 3-pointer at 3:09, Shenandoah saw the Blazers score the game's next six points to take a 70-67 lead with 1:09 remaining.

SU was able to cut the deficit to one point on two occasions, the first on a pair of free throws from Kirstyn Arcata and the second on a pair from French, but Hood had an answer both times.

Taylor McGaughey's layup clinched it for Hood as Mathis missed a 3-pointer with two seconds left.

In addition to French's 28, Donley had 11 and Arcata 10.

Ebony Pitt had a team-high 21 for the Blazers.

Hood shot 41 percent to 38 percent for the Hornets, outscored SU 44-30 in the paint and 28-11 off of turnovers.

Shenandoah is right back at it on Monday in a 4 p.m. home non-league contest versus Marymount.
