Men's Hoops Drops Tournament Opener

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – Greensboro College rained down a host of 3-pointers Friday night to key a 100-74 non-league men's basketball victory over Shenandoah University in the opening game of the 2016 Roger Taylor Tournament Friday evening.

The Pride (2-2) tied a tournament record with 14 3-pointers in the win over Shenandoah (4-2).

Ten of those 3-pointers came in the first half as GC jumped out to a 33-11 lead on its way to a 49-33 advantage at the break.

Senior Malcolm Clark tried to keep the Hornets in it, scoring 18 of his co-game-high 26 points in the opening 20 minutes, but it was not enough as Greensboro shot 53 percent from the field and 59 percent behind the arc (10 of 17) in building that 16-point halftime lead.

The halftime break did little to cool off the Pride as they scored the first eight points of the second half to expand the lead to 57-33 with 16:44 to play.

The bulge eventually reached 33 points, 74-41, with 11:56 left before Shenandoah went on a 21-11 run over the next 5:44 to make it 85-62 with 6:34 remaining.

Clark was the only SU player in double figures. He had 26 points on 7 of 13 shooting from field and 12 of 14 from the line.

Greensboro, which shot 55 percent to 45 percent for the Hornets, also had a 44-27 advantage on the glass.

Joseph Gatling matched Clark with 26 points for the Pride.

Shenandoah completes tournament play on Saturday with a 3 p.m. game against tournament host N.C. Wesleyan.
