FERRUM, Va. - There were plenty of bright spots in the Shenandoah men's lacrosse season opener as they fell, 11-10, on the road at Ferrum earlier today.
The Hornets didn't waste any time getting on the scoreboard. After the Panthers won the initial faceoff, the tide quickly shifted in favor of SU as Ryan Schott found the back of the net at the 14:49 mark.
Ferrum countered quickly, making it a 1-1 game with 13:56 left in the first quarter.
But while the first few minutes were filled with fireworks, the initial defensive jitters were calmed and both teams began to settle. The Panthers tacked on another goal in the middle of the period, entering the second quarter with a, 2-1, edge.
The two squads traded goals in the second quarter, but Ferrum gained steam as the game progressed. The Panthers entered halftime leading, 7-4.
Much like the first quarter, SU struck quick in the third. Colton Fisher scooped up a ground ball on the faceoff, and Stephen LaTona finished the possession with a goal, trimming the deficit to just two.
LaTona continued to shine in the third quarter, adding two more goals. Orlando Levins added another score at the end of the period and Shenandoah was back on top.
While the Hornets held a, 10-7, lead with 11:01 remaining, Ferrum wasn't going to back down. After climbing back and making it, 10-10, Ryan Tesler scored the game winner with 4:40 left. The Hornet's offense couldn't find the net for the remainder of the contest, resulting in a loss in their first game of the season.
LaTona led the way for Shenandoah with five goals. Schott finished the day with two goals and an assist.
SU will host Wesley next Saturday.
