FREDERICKSBURG, Va.- The Hornets' women's lacrosse team had a slow start in their road opener against Mary Washington on Wednesday. Despite a strong effort in the second half, SU couldn't erase the deficit, falling 13-4 in its first game of the season. 

The Eagles established an early offensive rhythm, leading 9-1 at the halfway mark. Shenandoah's only goal in the first half came from Abby Zorrilla on a free position shot. 

Six different Mary Washington players found the back of the net in the first half. 

While SU took a little too long to jell, it looked like a more confident team in the second half. Evie Gaffney, Jackie Hemler and Miranda Rudacille all scored. The Shenandoah defense held the Eagles to just four goals in the final 30 minutes. 

Holly Hudson and Mackenzie Maguire led UMW with three goals each. 

The Hornets will look to build off their second-half momentum on Saturday when they host Christopher Newport.
