LYNCHBURG, Va. - The SU Women's Hoops team beat Randolph College in dramatic fashion on Saturday, sinking a three-pointer with five seconds remaining to seal a 74-73 road victory.
Shenandoah (7-18, 4-12 ODAC), battled with Randolph (4-21, 2-14) for the entirety of the game.
The opponent held a 10-point edge midway through the second quarter, but the Hornets continued to grind. At halftime, SU trailed 42-35.
But contributions from across the roster put Shenandoah in a good position in the second half. An Erin French free throw gave the Hornets their first lead of the night with 3:46 remaining in the third quarter. The two squads continued to battle, and Randolph entered the final period with a slim, 58-54, edge.
SU struggled to score in the early part of the fourth, but found key baskets late in the quarter from Mary Severin and French.
Trailing 73-71 with 17 seconds on the game clock, Melissa Smeltzer-Kraft drew up the perfect play that was executed to perfection. Kirstyn Arcata got the look she wanted, and drained a three-pointer that gave SU its seventh win of the season.
Shannon Kuhn led the way for Shenandoah with 22 points and five rebounds. French added 20 points paired with an impressive 16 rebounds.
Shenandoah will travel to Randolph-Macon for the first round of the ODAC Tournament on Monday night.
