WINCHESTER, Va. - The No. 15/16 Shenandoah baseball team split a Saturday series against No. 34/RV Misericordia on Saturday.
In the first game, the Hornets (3-1) escaped with a 5-4 win in 13 innings before Misericordia (1-1) won game two 6-2. The nightcap was also a 13-inning affair.
SU found an early spark in game one. After Misericordia tacked on an early 2-0 lead, the Hornets' bats came to life. A Dan Cameron RBI double sent Joe Coleman home. The Cougars had a fielding error that lead to a John Wilt run, and a Nate Loman single brought Cameron home.
The opponent added another run in the sixth, but both offenses remained quiet until the 13th inning. With bases loaded, Jake Loew singled which provided the go-ahead run for SU.
Phillip Morse (1-1) was the game one winner with 3.0 innings of relief work. The senior struck out two and walked one.
In game two, the two teams again found themselves in extra innings as Shenandoah scored two early runs, but were matched by the Cougars.
SU had a chance to win it in the 12th, with runners on second and third with two outs, but MU was able to get out of the frame and then scored four in the top of the 13th to provide the game-winning margin.
The Hornets will seek their fourth win of the year on Sunday as they host Penn State-Altoona.
