Mary Washington Defeats Baseball

WINCHESTER, Va. - No. 17/25 Mary Washington used a 13-hit attack to key a 9-5 victory over No. 8/12 Shenandoah Tuesday in non-league baseball action.

The Eagles (14-5), who snapped a four-game losing streak with the victory, scored two runs in the first and one in the second to take a lead they would not relinquish over Shenandoah (10-4).

The two teams each scored twice in the fifth before UMW used a three-run sixth to extend its lead to 8-2.

SU scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to cut the deficit to the final margin.

Freshman Zach Teeple (2-1) took the loss after allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits and one walk in 4.0 innings.

Steve Jones, the second of four relievers for Hornets skipper Kevin Anderson, struck out two in 2 1/3 innings of work.

John Wilt had a two-run home run in the eighth while Abel Arocho scored the hosts' final run of the game by scampering home on a wild pitch. Arocho reached on a double down the left field line and moved to third on a wild pitch.

Nate Loman also had two hits.

Tyler Daig, the second of five pitchers for UMW, got the win. He allowed one hit and struck out two in three innings.

Shenandoah returns to ODAC play on Wednesday with a 3:30 game against Washington and Lee.
