WINCHESTER, Va. - Visiting Marymount University scored the final five goals of the game on its way to a 16-13 non-league women's lacrosse win over Shenandoah Saturday afternoon.
Shenandoah (2-6) held a 13-11 lead following a Jackie Hemler goal with 21:01 remaining, but Marymount (6-2) had an answer.
The Saints cut the deficit in half two minutes after Hemler's goal, and then tied it on a Kelly Campbell goal with 9:03 left.
Just more than three minutes later, Abby Wescott scored the six of her seven goals on the day to put MU on top to stay.
Wescott scored again, this time on a free position with 4:38 left to increase the margin to two, and then played possession lacrosse in the final three minutes.
The final goal of the game came on a free position with two seconds left.
The first half was a wild affair as the two teams combined for 37 shots and 19 goals - Shenandoah took a 10-9 lead into the break on the strength of a Brittany Arndt free position goal at the 44 second mark.
That tally, Arndt's seventh of the game, also marked the completion of her second natural hat trick of the stanza. The junior led the hosts in scoring with seven goals with Hemler, Annie McCorry and Becky Bove all scoring twice.
Abby Zorrilla had three assists and McCorry one.
Rachel Levy, who came on midway through the first half in relief of Brittany Bain, had eight saves.
The two teams split 64 shots and Marymount held a 25-20 advantage in groundballs.
SU won 16 of 30 draws.
The Hornets open up ODAC play at Washington and Lee on Wednesday at 4:30.
