HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – The No. 9/11 Shenandoah University baseball team completed its second straight weekend sweep of ODAC competition by downing Hampden-Sydney 7-1 and 2-1 Saturday afternoon.
The Hornets (16-5, 5-3 ODAC) received strong pitching performances from senior left-handers Darrell Thompson and Michael Scimanico in completing the sweep over H-SC (16-10, 3-5).
In the opener, Thompson (4-1) allowed one run on eight hits and one walk in seven innings of work. He struck out seven before turning it over to classmate Ryan Mossman for the final six outs.
Scimanico (2-1) went eight innings in the nightcap, striking out six and giving up the one run on three hits.
Senior Phillip Morse worked the ninth, getting a strikeout and a 6-4-3 double play to close out the win.
SU scored three runs in the fourth, three more in the seventh and one in the eighth to pull away from the Tigers in game one.
Abel Arocho and Nate Loman had RBIs in the fourth while Jake Loew had a two-run single to center in the seventh to break open the contest.
Loew finished the game 4 for 5 with three RBI and Arocho 3 for 4 with two runs scored and the RBI.
Joe Coleman had a two-run single in the third to put the Hornets on top to stay in the nightcap. Loew was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the eighth to provide the final run of the contest.
The Hornets were held to five hits in game two, two each by Coleman and Luke Nussman and one from Tristan Baker.
Shenandoah hosts fellow 2015 NCAA Mid-East Regional participant La Roche on Monday in a 3 p.m. non-league contest.
