BUENA VISTA, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's tennis team earned its fourth victory of the spring with a 5-4 non-league win at Southern Virginia Wednesday.
Junior Kelly Sykes played the hero as his 6-1, 0-6, 6-4 victory at No. 5 singles pushed the Hornets (4-9) past SVU (9-9).
The Knights led 2-1 after doubles and extended their lead to 3-1 with a win at love in the No. 2 singles match.
Brett Dubin and Steven Baker brought the Hornets back to level with wins at Nos. 4 and 1 singles, respectively, only to see Southern Virginia get a 6-1, 7-5 win at No. 6 to put the Knights on the brink of victory.
Now needing wins in the final two matches to steal the victory, Shenandoah did just that by getting a 6-1, 7-5 win from Matt Hwang at No. 3 and then Sykes' three-set triumph at No. 5.
Hwang and Dubin were double winners on the day as the combined for an 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles.
