WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University swept home volleyball opener Tuesday evening versus non-conference opponent Goucher College.
The Hornets (5-5) won at 16,15, and 11 over the Gophers (1-5).
Goucher opened up with the first point of the initial set only to see Nichole Shannon put SU in the lead by four consecutive points from the service line.
An Emily Cheatwood kill, a service ace, and two Goucher errors gave the hosts a lead they would hold throughout the set.
Regine Bumper followed up with five points, sparking the Hornets to a 10-2 run to seal the opening set. The Gophers tried to stop the onslaught with a time out following Bumper's fourth point, but were unable to recover. Emily Cheatwood and Michelle DiVito combined for a block to get the set-clinching point.
In the second, Shenandoah jumped out to a 6-3 lead and coasted home to the 10-point win. Emily Cheatwood finished the set with six points on the line, and Goucher gave away the last point on a service error.
The two teams traded the first 10 points of the third before coach Jaime Terenzi's club seized control by scoring five of the next six points on the way to a the 25-11 victory.
Kaitlyn Kelley racked up six consecutive points to key that run before Rachel Cerretani completed it with an additional six. SU clinched the match on another GC attack error.
The Hornets take to the road to play their first conference match of the season on Friday at Bridgewater. The match begins at 7.
