Women's Soccer Knocks Out Knights

BUENA VISTA, Va.  – The Shenandoah University women's soccer team earned its sixth shutout win of the season with a 4-0 non-league victory at Southern Virginia Tuesday night.

Senior Erin Septer had to make just two saves in posting the clean sheet, but one of them came off of a penalty kick midway through the second half.

Awarded the PK in the 78th minute, Southern Virginia (3-4) elected to have Keirra Tanuvasa take the attempt. Tanuvasa shot toward the right corner, only to see Septer dive left and punch the shot wide.

The late save preserved the 4-0 lead that SU (6-2) held at the time.

Freshman Emily Yergin gave the Hornets all of the offense they would need just 6:51 in after taking a long pass from Jennifer Nguyen and beating Knights keeper Megan Turner on a breakaway.

Alison Spaziani scored on a PK in the 27th minute before Averi Rosena closed out the first half scoring by ripping home a 20-yard shot in the 42nd minute.

Dornesha Cottoms set up Rosena's goal.

Yergin had the only goal of the second half, scoring unassisted in the 56th minute. The frosh now has an ODAC-leading eight goals through eight games.

SU outshot its hosts 17-5 with SVU earning four of the game's six corner kicks.

"We had some good performances by some players looking to step up for us," Shenandoah coach Liz Pike said. "I thought Bretton Butler and Lauren Johnson played well.

"The second half effort sealed the game for us and now it is time to focus on our game on Saturday."

The Hornets open up ODAC play on Saturday with a 4 p.m.  contest against Washington and Lee.
