Women's Soccer Shuts Out Generals

WINCHESTER, Va. – Shenandoah University opened up its 2016 ODAC women's soccer schedule Saturday afternoon with a 1-0 victory over Washington and Lee.

Freshman Emily Yergin gave the Hornets (7-2, 1-0 ODAC) the lone goal of the game. In the 58th minute, Yergin corralled a long pass from senior Alysha McCleaf and found herself with a step on the Generals (4-3, 0-1) defense.

Yergin dribbed into the box before ripping her shot past W&L keeper Maggie Nolan for what proved to be the game-winner.

"Another great finish for Emily (Yergin)," SU coach Liz Pike said. "We worked hard today and it is terrific that we are able to start off the ODAC schedule with a win."

Yergin's goal was her ninth of the season. She currently leads the ODAC in goals scored.

Hornets goalkeeper Erin Septer had five saves with her defense stopping an additional shot.

The shutout is Shenandoah's (and Septer's) seventh of the season.

Washington and Lee outshot SU 9-7 with the two teams splitting eight corner kicks.

The Hornets continue ODAC play on Wednesday with a 7 p.m. home game versus Eastern Mennonite.
