Quakers Outlast Volleyball

By Cory Nelson '12

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Host Guilford College outlasted Shenandoah University in a 3-0 ODAC volleyball victory Saturday afternoon.

The Quakers (7-6, 3-1 ODAC) claimed the victory over SU (7-8, 1-3) in straight sets, winning at 19, 23 and 23.

The Hornets tallied more kills in the opening set with 13 to nine for GC, but were hampered by 10 attack errors compared to just three for the hosts.

Set number two was back-and-forth and went down to the wire. Shenandoah held a 22-21 before the Quakers rallied to claim four of the final five points of the set to put themselves one set from clinching.

It appeared as though Guilford was going to win the third set in dominant fashion when it jumped out to 20-13 lead, but the Hornets battled to tie the set at 23-23.

Unfortunately for the visiting fans, SU committed a service error and an attack error to give the Quakers the final two points of the contest.

Elizabeth Lamont and Caylin Harris each had each kills for Shenandoah, who totaled 39 as a team.

Jasmine Callahan led the Hornets in assists with 18 with Rachel Cerretani adding 15 of her own.

Nicole Shannon and Lamont each accumulated 12 digs for the SU defense.

Coach Jaime Terenzi's team will welcome in defending ODAC champions, Randolph-Macon, Tuesday for a 7:00 match in Shingleton Gymnasium.
