HARRISONBURG, Va. – A furious Shenandoah University comeback fell just short in a 101-95 ODAC men's basketball loss at Eastern Mennonite Wednesday evening.
Trailing by 11 points with 94 seconds remaining, Shenandoah (6-12, 2-7 ODAC) forced overtime by scoring 16 of the final 21 points of regulation.
Jonah Meredith got the run started with one of two from the line before Malcolm Clark cut the deficit to six by scoring five of the game's next seven points on two layups and a free throw.
Sophomore Dalon McHugh then stepped to the plate to hit a pair of 3-pointers, banking one in at the 50-second mark and finishing off a dribble-drive kickout from Clark 20 seconds later.
Clark actually gave SU a one-point, 82-81, lead with a layup at the 26-second mark only to see EMU retake the lead on a Travis Clower 3-pointer with six left in regulation.
Shenandoah raced down the floor and McHugh found Seth Myers with the game-tying layup with one second to go.
McHugh gave the Hornets the initial lead of OT by canning a pair from the line 61 seconds into the extra session, but this would be the last time that SU held the advantage.
Clower drained another '3' just 48 seconds after McHugh's free throws and EMU never trailed again. The 3-pointer ignited a 10-2 run for the hosts to give the Royals enough cushion to hold on for the win.
A 7-3 Shenandoah run over the next 67 brought SU to within two, but Eastern Mennonite hit all four of its attempts from the charity stripe down the stretch to seal the win.
Clark led SU with 28 points with McHugh adding a career-high 18. Thanks to his game-high 15 rebounds, Clark posted his sixth double-double of the season and helped the Hornets to a 44-39 advantage on the boards.
Shenandoah travels to the Hill City Saturday afternoon for a 2 p.m. ODAC contest at Randolph College.
