LYNCHBURG, Va. – Sophomore Dalon McHugh drained a 3-pointer from the top of the key with five seconds remaining Saturday to give Shenandoah a 65-62 ODAC men's basketball victory over Randolph College.
The win for Shenandoah (7-12, 3-7 ODAC) splits the season series with the WildCats (7-12, 4-6) and extends the streak to four games in which the road team has been victorious.
McHugh's bucket, one of four he had on the afternoon, capped a contest in which the two teams traded the lead three times and were tied on four other occasions.
SU trailed by as many as 12 and had to erase a nine-point deficit in the final 11:43 of the contest.
After Ryan Fields gave the 'Cats a six-point, 54-48, lead with 9:07 remaining by making on eof two from the line, the Hornets began their comeback.
Starting with a Malcolm Clark layup at 8:56, SU scored eight of the game's next 10 points to tie it at 56-56 following a Kwa McDonald 3-pointer with 5:45 remaining.
Shenandoah actually took the lead 38 seconds later thanks to two Clark free throws and held a four-point, 62-58, lead with 3:01 left, but needed McHugh's heroics as Fields scored four straight points for the hosts and tied the game at 62-62 with 37 seconds remaining.
Following a Hornets time-out at 21 seconds, Shenandoah worked the ball around the perimeter before finding McHugh for the 3-pointer just before the 30-second shot clock expired.
The shot hit nothing but net and Reid Jacoby missed a ¾ court length shot as time expired to give SU its second victory in the last three meetings with the 'Cats.
Clark had his seventh double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 boards with McHugh adding 11 points.
Coach Rob Pryor's club shot 47 percent to 41 percent for Randolph with the 'Cats grabbing 35 of the game's 68 rebounds.
Shenandoah hosts Washington and Lee on Wednesday in a 7 p.m. ODAC contest.
