WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University men's basketball team led wire-to-wire Wednesday evening in a 74-68 ODAC men's basketball victory over Washington and Lee.
Shenandoah (8-12, 4-7 ODAC) scored the game's initial eight points, but had to hold off a furious W&L (8-12, 4-7) second half rally.
Leading 58-41 following an Evan Bates 3-point play at 8:39, the Hornets saw Washington and Lee score 17 of the game's next 18 points to cut the deficit to just one, 59-58, with 2:53 left.
Sophomore Dalon McHugh responded with a fast break layup 11 seconds after the Generals brought it to within one and then Malcolm Clark, who had a co-team-high 18 points, had possibly the biggest play of the game as he blocked Clayton Murtha's layup attempt at 2:34.
Clark, who had four fouls at the time, swatted the shot to Kwa McDonald who in turn found McHugh for another fast break layup and Shenandoah never looked back in securing the victory.
The two layups started an 11-2 run that put SU up 10, 70-60, with 44 seconds remaining. W&L scored eight of the game's final 12 points to provide the final margin of victory.
Shenandoah, on the strength of 57 percent shooting in the second half, shot an even 49 percent (24 of 49) for the game.
Washington and Lee was held to 39 percent shooting after shooting just 8 of 27 (29.6 percent) in the first half.
Clark and McDonald both had 18 points with Bates adding 10 points.
Clark had 10 rebounds to post his seventh double-double of the season.
Murtha had 23 points and 10 rebounds for the Generals.
The consecutive ODAC wins are the first for the program since defeating Emory and Henry and Roanoke January 4 and 11, 2014. The two-game winning streak is the third for the team this season.
Shenandoah continues this homestand on Saturday with a 3 p.m. ODAC contest versus Emory and Henry.
