Marlins Shut Out Women's Soccer

WINCHESTER, Va. – A pair of perfectly threaded passes led to two first half goals for Virginia Wesleyan in a 2-0 ODAC victory over Shenandoah Saturday afternoon.

Marli Hayward and Ryan McCurry set up Anna Pedicone for goals in the 15th and 35th minutes to propel the Marlins (9-5-1, 5-1 ODAC) past Shenandoah (7-7, 2-4).

Hornets keeper Kasey Ritchitt had no chance on either shot as the passes put Pedicone alone versus Ritchitt and Pedicone all had to do was slip the ball past the on-rushing goalkeeper.

VWU took six of the nine second half shots, but neither team was able to find the back of the net.

Shenandoah had its best chance of the stanza as Virginia Wesleyan goalkeeper Alicia Zamora made a diving stop versus Emily Yergin in the 81st minute.

The Marlins had an apparent goal (by Pedicone) called back 24 seconds after the Zamora save on an offside call. In the 90th minute, Pedicone missed her chance at a hat trick by pushing a 12-yard shot at an open net wide to the left.

Ritchitt had six saves in 81 minutes of work.

The SU women are back in action on Tuesday at 4 p.m. in an ODAC contest at Washington and Lee.
