WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's volleyball team celebrated its annual Dig Pink game Wednesday evening by earning its first ODAC win of the season.
Shenandoah (7-16, 1-7 ODAC) needed all five sets versus Eastern Mennonite (8-14, 2-6), but outlasted the Royals in a 25-18, 22-25, 22-25, 25-13, 15-3 win.
After bringing the match back to even with that 25-13 victory in the fourth, it was all Shenandoah in the fifth.
A Caylin Harris kill off a Megan Hillyard assist gave SU a 2-1 lead in the set and the Hornets never trailed again.
Leading 5-2 following an Emily Cheatwood kill, Hillyard stepped to the service line and reeled off eight straight points to give the hosts a commanding 13-2 advantage.
After losing the serve on a service error, Sabrina Semo got it back with a kill one serve later before serving the final point to clinch the win.
Shenandoah got that final point on an EMU attack error.
Senior Kaitlyn Kelley had a match-high 16 kills with Semo adding 11 and Harris 10.
Hillyard had 35 assists and Kayla Robey 10.
Nicole Shannon paced the defense with 31 digs while Kelley had a double-double thanks to her 13 digs.
SU continues this homestand on Friday night with a 7 p.m. Senior Night contest versus Hollins. Kaitlyn Kelley, the squad's lone senior, will be recognized prior to the game.
