Volleyball Posts Third Straight Win

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University volleyball team earned its third ODAC victory in the past four days Saturday with a 3-0 sweep over Roanoke.

Shenandoah (9-16, 3-7) won by the slimmest of margins over the Maroons (8-14, 4-6), taking all three sets by a 25-23 score.

Trailing 23-22 in the third, SU scored the final three points of the match on a Roanoke attack error followed by Emily Cheatwood and Kaitlyn Kelley kills.

The win is the first for the program over Roanoke since a 3-0 sweep on September 4, 1999 and just the second in the longtime series.

Roanoke had won 14 straight dating back to that last Shenandoah victory.

Saturday's game was a back-and-forth affair with the two teams combining for 22 ties and 12 lead changes. Eighteen of those situations happened in the second set as the two teams were tied 12 times and traded the lead on six occasions, the last when a Cheatwood kill led to a 6-3 run to finish the set and the 25-23 triumph.

Senior Kaitlyn Kelley had a co-game-high 12 kills for the victors with Caylin Harris adding nine.

Megan Hillyard had 30 of the squad's 32 assists.

Defensively, Hillyard and Nicole Shannon had 13 digs with Kelley adding 12 and Michelle DiVito 11.

Cheatwood had five blocks assisted and DiVito four.

The Hornets complete their ODAC slate on Tuesday night with a 7 p.m. home matchup versus Washington and Lee.
