WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's soccer team put itself in position to earn the No. 7 seed at the upcoming ODAC Tournament with a 3-2 victory over Randolph-Macon Wednesday evening.
Shenandoah (9-8, 4-5 ODAC) is now tied for seventh in the league with Eastern Mennonite with one game to play thanks to the one-goal win over Macon (9-5-1, 6-3).
SU finishes its league slate on Sunday at Emory and Henry; the Wasps are tied with Guilford for ninth with 10 points each.
GC hosts Eastern Mennonite on Saturday and a Quakers win means that the Hornets would only need a tie Sunday in their season finale at E&H to qualify for the tournament.
A Shenandoah win Sunday over the Wasps would give head coach Liz Pike's squad 15 points and push SU into sole possession of seventh place.
In that scenario, the Hornets would travel to the league's No. 2 seed one week from tonight for a quarterfinal round contest.
Senior Lauren Johnson, who was honored prior to the game along with classmates Michelle Krause and Alex Wessel, scored the game-winner in the 77th minute.
Junior Rebecca Collimore set Johnson up for her second game-winning goal this season.
Johnson's tally, her third of the year, gave the Hornets a 3-1 lead. The Yellow Jackets made matters interesting with a goal in the 81st minute, but SU goalkeeper Kasey Richitt made her seventh save of the game in the 88th minute and Shenandoah held on for the win.
"The longest eight minutes of my life," Pike said of the final moments of the game. "A great performance by the three seniors tonight – LJ (Johnson) scoring the game-winner and both Michelle (Krause) and Alex (Wessel) on defense.
"This was a good win for us. Now we know that if we win, we are in (to the tournament)."
Collimore set Emily Yergin up for the squad's first goal, in the 37th minute, with freshman Liz Keefer scoring off an assist from classmate Mikayla McDonald in the 64th.
Macon scored its goals in the 49th and 81st minutes.
R-MC outshot SU 16-14 with the two teams splitting 12 corner kicks.
Shenandoah's game at Emory and Henry Sunday is scheduled for 1 p.m.
