WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Shenandoah University men's basketball team earned its second straight victory with a 78-69 non-league win at Gallaudet University Sunday afternoon.
The win is also the first road victory for SU (2-1) under new coach Adam Walsh.
Trailing by one point, 58-57, following a Kelly Preston jumper for the Bison (0-5) 7:38 remaining, Shenandoah scored the game's next 11 points to seize total control of the contest.
Senior Jonah Meredith, who finished with 17 points, gave the Hornets the lead for good by canning a pair from the line with 7:15 remaining.
Kwa McDonald followed with a pair of buckets, the former a layup thanks to a Meredith assist and the latter a dunk, before Jalyn Jarrett knocked down two free throws and Christian Meredith a 3-pointer to give SU a 68-58 lead with 4:55 left.
Gallaudet would get no closer than five points the rest of the way.
After hitting just 2-of-7 from the line in the opening 20 minutes, Shenandoah made 12 of its 15 second half attempts from the charity stripe to help seal the win.
Walsh' club made 4 of its final 6 free throws, and Christopher Chaney rebounded his own miss with 1:21 to play that pushed the Hornets lead out to nine points.
McDonald, the game's leading scorer with 23 points, closed out the game with a three-point play six seconds before the final horn.
The Bison held a 43-41 edge on the glass that led to an 18-10 advantage in second chance points, but the SU bench (led by McDonald's 23) outscored Gallaudet's bench 48-12.
Shenandoah also had a 14-0 advantage in fast break points.
There were nine lead changes and five ties in the contest.
Chaney had his first career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
The Hornets are back in action tomorrow afternoon at noon in an exhibition contest at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County. The game is scheduled to be broadcast on ESPN3.
