Retrievers Top Men's Hoops

BALTIMORE, Md. – Host Maryland-Baltimore County used a big second half run to key an 88-59 men's basketball victory over Shenandoah University Monday afternoon.

With the DI Retrievers (4-3) leading by just three, 43-40, at the 18:20 mark of the second, UMBC pulled away from Shenandoah (2-1) with a dominating run.

Kwa McDonald drained a 3-pointer for SU at that 18:20 mark to keep SU within three points, only to see the Retrievers answer.

UMBC, which led just 40-37 at the break, scored 33 of the game's next 41 points to clinch the victory.

Sophomore Jalyn Jarrett ended the Retrievers run with a layup at 6:52, but SU would get no closer than 24 points the rest of the way.

The Hornets missed 11 of 16 shots and turned the ball over nine times during this 10:23 span.

Sophomore Alan Dabney paced the Hornets with 10 points and also co-led (along with Jordan Hunter and Christopher Chaney) in the team in rebounds with four.

Jalyn Jarrett had four assists.

UMBC shot 49 percent (32-of-66) and had 13 3-pointers to 38 percent (21-of-55) and eight 3-pointers for SU.

The Retrievers had a 44-29 edge on the glass that helped the hosts to outscore the Hornets 34-10 in the paint and 12-4 in second chance points.

Shenandoah returns home on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. non-league contest versus Mount Aloysius.

Note: Today's game was an exhibition contest for SU and a game for UMBC.
