Men's Hoops Outlasts Mounties

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University men's basketball team earned its third straight win Wednesday night with a 66-58 non-league victory over Mount Aloysius.

Shenandoah (3-1) led for 33:41 of the contest but had to hold on as Mount Aloysius (0-3) made a game of it late in the second half.

Leading by 17, 51-34, following a Christopher Chaney layup with exactly 12:00 to play, the Hornets saw MAC score 19 of the game's next 26 points to cut the deficit to just five points with 2:56 remaining.

Shenandoah, which finished just 12-of-21 (57 percent) from the line for the game, hit four of its last five from the charity stripe (all from Jonah Meredith) going down the stretch to clinch the victory.

"We didn't shoot the ball well from the line tonight but Jonah bailed us out," head coach Adam Walsh said.

The Mounties, who had six 3-pointers in the second half after making just one in the first, missed four of their five shots during that closing stretch.

Meredith and Kwa McDonald led the victors with 13 points each while Chaney had 11 points off the bench.

Meredith had six rebounds to help SU take the rebounding battle 37-34.

"I was happy with our effort in the first half, but we needed to work on it in the second.

"We finally won a rebounding battle. We are going to need to be ready to play on Saturday."

Shenandoah shot 46 percent (23-of-50) for the game including 53 percent (10-of-19) in the second half.

Trent McErlane paced Mount Aloysius with a game-high 19 points.

The men open up ODAC play on Saturday in a 2 p.m. home game versus Emory and Henry.
