NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Dubuque University led over the final three quarters in a 73-56 women's basketball victory over Shenandoah University Saturday afternoon in the final game of the Music City Classic.
Shenandoah (5-6) led 14-10 following a pair of Kirstyn Arcata free throws with 1:13 remaining in the first quarter, but Dubuque (3-9) had an answer.
The Spartans hit a pair of 3-pointers to close out the stanza and held that advantage over the final 30 minutes of the contest.
DU solidified its lead by scoring 13 of the initial 19 points of the second, ended by two Jordan Sondrol free throws at 2:34, and took a 31-22 lead into halftime.
One more run, this one 9-3 to start the second half, pushed the Spartans lead out to 15 points. Dubuque held a double-digit lead for the remainder of the contest.
Ashley Stone, who along with Sondrol and Arcata scored in double figures, ended this second run with a fastbreak layup 2:57 into the third.
The Spartans had a 43-33 advantage on the glass which led to them scoring 19 of the game's 23 second-chance points.
DU also converted 22 SU turnovers into 22 points.
Arcata and Sondrol both had 17 points for the Hornets with Stone adding 15. Arcata is now 98 points from 1000 for her career and at her current rate of 12.5 points per game, she will become the 18th woman in program history to score 1000 career points in the second half of the Randolph game on January 27.
Shenandoah hosts Randolph-Macon on Tuesday in a 7 p.m. ODAC contest.
