Women's Hoops Trounces Squirrels

STAUNTON, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's basketball team earned its second straight win Saturday afternoon with a 72-55 non-league victory at Mary Baldwin.

The Hornets (4-3) outscored the Squirrels (1-7) 26-6 in the third quarter to seize total control of the contest.

After taking a 17-7 lead after one, Shenandoah found itself in a ballgame as Mary Baldwin scored 21 of the final 28 points of the first half to a take a 33-31 lead into the break.

That lead lasted only 31 seconds into the second half.

Sophomore McKenzie Mathis kicked off an 18-0 run to start the third quarter with a jumper at 9:29, and after hitting another one 27 seconds later, the Hornets never trailed again.

Mathis, who finished with 14 points, pushed the lead into double digits with a fast break layup at 6:47 before senior Kirstyn Arcata completed the run with a bucket at 5:23.

From this point on, Shenandoah's lead would be at least 14 points and reached a high of 25 points following a three-point play from Ashley Stone with 5:08 remaining.

MBU finished the game on a 10-3 run versus the Hornets reserves to provide the final margin of victory.

Sophomore Jordan Sondrol led the victors with 17 points and 16 rebounds with Mathis adding 14 points, Stone 11 and Arcata 10.

SU had a 55-33 advantage on the glass that led to the Hornets scoring 34 of the game's 56 points in the paint and 18 of 30 second chance points.

"We started out slow and sluggish in the first half, head coach Melissa Smeltzer-Kraft said. "I think it was a product of finals week just wrapping up. I was proud of our second half response and to get the win on the road. It's all about getting better each and every day, which we did today."

Shenandoah hosts another former USA South Conference rival, N.C. Wesleyan, on Wednesday in a 7 p.m. non-league contest.
