Women's Lax Drops Opener

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's lacrosse team opened up its 2017 season Wednesday afternoon with a 15-5 non-league loss to Mary Washington.

The Eagles (2-1) scored the game's first 11 goals to take a lead they would not relinquish over Shenandoah (0-1).

Freshman Jordyn Miller scored the Hornets first goal of the contest at the 27:48 mark of the second; SU and UMW split the 10 goals scored in the second half.

Miller's tally, one of two she had on the day, started a 5-1 run for the Hornets that brought Shenandoah to 12-5 deficit with 8:12 remaining.

Freshman Cassie Arndt completed that run when she finished off an Alexandra Simonson feed.

Annie McCorry, Sabrina Elliott, Brittany Arndt and Miller had the hosts other goals during this run.

Mary Washington scored three goals in the final 2:23, with the last coming just 14 seconds before the final horn, to extend its lead back to 10 goals.

UMW outshot the Hornets 26-13 with the two teams splitting 34 groundballs. The Eagles won 18 of the game's 22 draw controls.

Freshman Madeline Card had seven saves in her first start in the goal.

Shenandoah takes to the road this weekend to face the University of Scranton in a non-league contest.
