WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University men's lacrosse team earned its second win in as many outings this season with a 9-4 non-league victory over Hood College Saturday afternoon.
Shenandoah (2-0) led wire-to-wire in earning its fifth straight win over the Blazers (0-2) in the longtime series.
SU has now won 10 of 12 lifetime matchups versus Hood.
Senior Ben Judy backstopped the Hornets to the win with 20 saves – HC outshot the Hornets, 42-36, and dominated possession by winning 16 of the 17 faceoffs.
However, the defense aided Judy by causing 13 turnovers and posting 22 successful clears in 26 attempts.
Senior Stephen LaTona got the hosts on the board first by finishing off a Tilghman Sanders feed at the 13:13 mark of the first.
The assist was one of five on the day for Sanders, who also scored twice.
Michael Brooks and Eric Sawyer scored at 9:39 and 1:27, respectively, to put the Hornets up 3-0.
Hood was able to cut the deficit to one goal on two occasions, the second with 4:37 to play in the second, before Shenandoah put the game away with a four-goal run that sandwiched halftime.
The initial goal in this spurt, by Ryan Schott at 4:28, came off of the Hornets lone faceoff win.
LSM Morgan Robinson snared the draw in midair, found Sanders at the top of the box who fed Schott for the textbook 4-on-3 fastbreak goal.
"Though it was not our best effort today, we are excited to get a win against a quality opponent," head coach Tim Marshall said. "Ben Judy played an outstanding game and was the backbone of the defense."
Shenandoah is on the road on Wednesday in a 4 p.m. non-league contest at Delaware Valley.
