Hampden-Sydney Tops Men's Lax

WINCHESTER, Va. - Visiting Hampden-Sydney dominated possession on its way to a 17-8 ODAC men's lacrosse victory over Shenandoah Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers (6-3, 1-1 ODAC) took 53 of the game's 83 shots and won 20 of 28 faceoffs on their way to the nine-goal victory over SU (5-3, 1-1).

H-SC was especially dominant in the first half  - the Tigers owned a 31-13 edge in shots, 25-12 in groundballs and won 11 of 14 draws at the 'x' in taking a 9-3 halftime lead.

Shenandoah goalkeeper Ben Judy was again outstanding - he had 12 of his 19 saves in the initial 30 minutes, but the Hampden-Sydney offense proved to be too much.

The majority of this damage was done in the second quarter. Trailing by just one, 4-3, following an Eric Sawyer-to-Tillman Sanders goal at 12:29 of the second, SU saw the Tigers reel off five straight goals to complete the quarter.

H-SC won all but the final faceoff during this run with that last goal of the quarter coming just 15 seconds before the halftime horn.

In the second half, Shenandoah sandwiched a four-goal run of its own around the end of the third period. Senior Stephen LaTona provided a highlight of this spurt with a goal and two assists which gives him a record-tying 204 points. With his next point, LaTona will pass Stephen Mayor '09 for the all-time lead at SU.

Sophomore Ryan Schott had four goals and one assist to lead the offense.

Shenandoah continues this homestand on Saturday with a 1 p.m. ODAC contest versus Guilford.
