WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's lacrosse team earned its second ODAC win of the season with a 9-8, overtime victory over Guilford College Saturday afternoon.
Shenandoah (6-3, 2-1 ODAC) defeated Guilford (4-5, 0-3) for just the second time in history and for the first time since joining the league for the 2013 season with the OT win.
Senior Connor Bishop netted the game-winner, finishing off an Eric Sawyer feed with 1:59 to play in the first OT.
Bishop's goal ended a run in which the Quakers roared back into the contest by scoring the final five goals of regulation.
Leading 8-3 after Ryan Schott scored unassisted with 4:50 to play in the third, SU was held off the board for the next 21:11 of game time until Bishop netted that game-winner.
The Hornets had led throughout the game, scoring the initial goal of the contest at 9:52 of the first and leading 3-0 after one and 5-2 at the break.
A 3-1 run to start the second half, ending with Schott's goal at 4:50, extended the lead out to five goals only to see GC rally.
Guilford got the game-tying goal with 15 seconds to play in regulation.
Senior Stephen LaTona finished with one goal and one assist for the Hornets and his assist at 11:51 of the second (on a Schott goal) made him the all-time points leader at SU. He broke the record he co-held with Stephen Mayor '09.
GC outshot SU 55-35 and also had a 31-27 advantage in groundballs. Shenandoah won 12 of 20 faceoffs and goalkeeper Ben Judy negated the Quakers shot total with 17 saves.
"This was a huge win for our program," head coach Tim Marshall said. "We were able to regain our composure in overtime, execute our offense and come away with a big win. I am incredibly proud of this team."
SU steps out-of-conference next Saturday for a 1 p.m. home game versus Ferrum.
