WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University men's lacrosse team completed its non-conference slate Saturday with a 13-8 victory over Ferrum College.

The win also ensures the squad of its best record since 2008, when the Hornets finished with a 9-3 record.

The seven wins so far this season are also the most since that 2008 season and represents the third-best total in program history.

Senior Stephen LaTona led SU to its first-ever victory over Ferrum (5-8) with six goals and one assist for seven points.

LaTona put Shenandoah on top to stay by finishing off a Tilghman Sanders assist at the 9:24 mark of the first. Three minutes later, Eric Sawyer fed LaTona before Orlando Levins finished off the first quarter with an unassisted goal at :46.

The two teams split eight goals in the second quarter, giving coach Tim Marshall's club a 7-4 lead at the break.

The Hornets them made the outcome academic by scoring five of the first six goals in the second half, including three straight to start the fourth quarter.

Ferrum finished the game on a 3-1 run, scoring its final goal with one second remaining.

"Today's win was a team effort," Marshall said. "We played sound in all aspects of the game and now are excited to focus on ODAC play from here on out."

Shenandoah had a 38-33 advantage in shots, won 18 of 25 faceoffs and had a 32-16 bulge in groundballs.

The Hornets host national power Lynchburg in a 7 p.m. ODAC contest Wednesday evening.
